From April 9 to 11, the 20th International Alliance of Urolithiasis (IAU) Endourology Workshop was held in Guangzhou.

The event attracted 120 urologists from 36 countries, with nearly 30 international top urological experts invited to give lectures. Discussions covered cutting-edge topics such as urinary stone treatment, minimally invasive surgical innovations, robotic surgery applications, and personalized diagnostics and therapies, delving into the latest technologies and their applications.

Professor Zeng Guohua, Co-founder and Chairman of IAU, delivered a keynote speech at the opening ceremony, emphasizing the leading role of minimally invasive techniques in advancing the global field of urology.

"We hope to bring China's high-quality medical devices and technologies to more countries, conduct more live surgical broadcasts, establish overseas training centers, and benefit more people worldwide," Zeng stated.

During the workshop, several international experts demonstrated multiple high-difficulty minimally invasive surgeries on-site, including urinary stone surgeries, urinary tract tumor surgeries, and urinary tract reconstruction surgeries, with simultaneous live streaming available online.

The f-URS (flexible ureteroscopy lithotripsy) approach, combined with real-time intrarenal pressure (IRP) monitoring technology, significantly improved lithotripsy efficiency and reduced complication rates. Standard PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy) surgery and ultrasound-guided precise puncture techniques showcased the core technologies for stone treatment to the attending physicians.

Additionally, robot-assisted urinary tract reconstruction and tumor surgeries demonstrated the minimally invasive advantages and potential of robotic technology in complex urological procedures through precise dissection and anastomosis.

All equipment and consumables used in the surgical demonstrations during this conference were from Chinese brands developed and produced domestically.

"I'm lucky to learn directly from Professor Zeng Guohua, the pioneer of minimally invasive stone technology. These technologies are highly advanced here in China, quite different from surgical methods in my country, with smaller incisions and better outcomes. That's why I'm here to learn as much as I can from him," said Khaled Saeed from Saudi Arabia, who is currently pursuing a one-year urology fellowship program in Guangzhou.

Viktor Stankov from the Kingdom of Macedonia expressed great interest in robotic surgery techniques. "I'm particularly interested in robotic oncology surgery. My goal is to learn the necessary skills to return to my country and practice these techniques with proficiency," he said.

The conference was organized by the Guangdong Medical Association and the International Alliance of Urolithiasis, with Guangzhou Medical University and the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University as co-hosts.

Thus far, IAU has grown into the world's largest academic organization for urolithiasis, boasting 939 members from 115 countries.

It was announced that Guangdong Medical University will bring Chinese medical robots to Kazakhstan in May to teach how to perform minimally invasive urological surgeries using robotic technology.
